FAQ
The basics on matches, watch data and the first beta.
foe is in development. These answers describe the planned beta, and details may change during testing.
Getting started
Can I download foe yet?
Not yet. The first iPhone beta is still in development and will be invite-only. There's no public download available.
Who is foe for?
Adults 18 and over who want some competition in their daily activity. The first beta is a small group testing real matches together.
Do I need a smartwatch?
Yes. foe uses watch activity for its matches. We're building the first iPhone beta around Apple Watch and Garmin data. Watch support and the connection process still need real-device testing.
Matches
When does a match start and end?
Match days run from midnight to midnight Eastern time. Everyone in the first beta uses that same schedule, even if they live in another time zone.
How do I get an opponent?
The plan is to pair you automatically on your match days. In the small closed beta, you'll compete with the other invited testers, so you'll see familiar opponents. Broader matchmaking comes later.
Can I take rest days?
Yes. You can schedule up to four rest days a week in advance and won't be matched on those days. Rest days need to be set before the match starts; they're not a way to cancel a match you're already in.
Activity and scoring
How is the score calculated?
We're testing a score that combines workouts and everyday movement using available watch data. The formula isn't final. The aim is to reward overall activity and pick up a real increase in effort when someone makes a push.
Can lifting compete with running or cycling?
That's the goal. We don't want one type of activity to win by default. Comparing different sports fairly is one of the main things we're testing, and watch data has limits in what it can tell us.
Do I have to start a workout on my watch?
Starting a recorded workout shouldn't be what earns you points. We want the same activity to count either way. Watches can collect different amounts of data during a recorded session, so this is part of what the beta needs to test.
Will the score update live?
We want updates to feel close to live, but they depend on your watch, its companion app and when data reaches foe. We can't promise a fixed update interval yet. Testing sync delays is part of the beta.
Chat and rankings
Can I message my opponent?
Yes. The plan is a chat for each daily match, with up to three messages per hour. Talk some trash, check in or give them credit. Slurs aren't allowed. The conversation closes when the match ends.
Will there be ranks and leaderboards?
Yes, ranks and leaderboards are part of the plan. We're still working out how match results, consistency and activity should affect rank. Those rules need testing before they're treated as final.
